And now with self-publishing people are pushing the boundaries and that's why they are also not ending up on the shelves of these big bookshops.ImageNationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06021414643103601330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-39984489800322697732010-12-01T18:28:50.073+00:002010-12-01T18:28:50.073+00:00Thank you for this incredibly well written article...Thank you for this incredibly well written article. SO TRUE. I liked Akpan's book... but was SO unsurprised that it got the Oprah nomination instead of the countless other books of (in my opinion) higher quality such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's or Mohammad Naseehu Ali's collections of short stories. Because his was only negative and theirs contained a mix of emotions. Because his showed only one view where theres show multiple experiences.

I love the two videos you link to, both are great at highlighting exactly what you are talking about. I've also found that the books that are the most visible and easy for me to find here in Canada are the more negative ones but if I search more I can find some of the newer and better books.

I hope that things change and we see a larger variety. It is shocking really that from a huge continent and such a large number of countries we say there can only be one certain story type. That just sounds boring :)Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18102250492155489672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-1903260627837672692010-12-01T15:57:40.671+00:002010-12-01T15:57:40.671+00:00@Kinna... thanks. I've had the chance to listen to Adichie's The Dangers of a Single Story' on many occasions and would agree with her as well. I was sad for the part where she says a univ. professor told her her debut was not authentically African. Why? Because her story has characters who ride in cars. WHAT A BITTER AND ANNOYING STATEMENT???

Nana, about the publishing comapnies, it is almost a CANKER & A DISEASE and I kind of wonder when they would pull away from the dictatorship of what the market says, sake of money. Maybe, we may want to HOPE, HOPE AND HOPE.

This is a good post by all standards. I like this.Geosihttp://geosireads.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
