His position lost grounds when apartheid was instituted and the government started killing the people. That's when South Africans decided that they needed more than just preaching to gain their independence.ImageNationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06021414643103601330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-47664803856493755082011-02-20T18:30:17.495+00:002011-02-20T18:30:17.495+00:00Read this book as a child of around 10 years old l...Read this book as a child of around 10 years old living in a country almost surrounded by Apartheid South Africa. I admit it was completely lost on me at the time. Not because I was not aware of the apartheid system. Any trip my family took that involved passing through South Africa I recall as quite the harrowing experience. Granted the KFC along the way was great but being stopped by police suspicious of black people driving a car was not fun nor was not being able to stay at certain hotels in Johannesburg. <br />Anyway, it was the subtleness in which Alan Paton was attacking the system that was indeed lost on me. I will definitely want to read it again from a much more enlightened perspective.Abena Serwaahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05888021677219851484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-92067235835803911632011-02-19T11:18:02.948+00:002011-02-19T11:18:02.948+00:00@Amanda, thanks... balance is the rule of the game...@Amanda, thanks... balance is the rule of the game. I'm afraid I'm very, very bad when it comes to history, any history at all, so I knew very little about South Africa and apartheid before reading this. I loved how balanced the perspective was.Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07026099426503180472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-10605859843682029872011-02-15T07:36:31.229+00:002011-02-15T07:36:31.229+00:00@Amy, thanks@Amy, thanksImageNationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06021414643103601330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-71979163100305878032011-02-15T02:48:44.026+00:002011-02-15T02:48:44.026+00:00Great review Nana, definitely a powerful novel.Great review Nana, definitely a powerful novel.Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18102250492155489672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29803016.post-20545133547642474582011-02-14T14:30:46.219+00:002011-02-14T14:30:46.219+00:00@Geosi, It's a great book.
